Green Eggs and Ham

Posted: 02-09-2012 | Categories: Parents & Students

I do not like them Sam-I-am.  I do not like green eggs and ham!  We all know how Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham tale goes, but did you know there’s a long list of strange foods that are actually very good for you?  As athletes, we can’t always pig out on junk food.  We have to be cautious of what we pile on our plates because it can affect our performance in practice and when we compete.  Don’t worry, we’re not going to make you eat our green eggs and ham, but when you’re up for trying a new dish, think about one of these because they’re very good for you.  We like these foods oh yes we do.  We like them because they’re so good for you!  That was our failed attempt to rhyme like Dr. Seuss.  Nevertheless, on to the list!

1. Here in Cajun Country we’re used to ‘gators.  The hit television series Swamp People has made the sport of catching these bayou beauties seem like all fun and games, when really it’s quite a dangerous and wild adventure.  Some of us even blow off gators thanks to that pesky University of Florida.  No matter how you feel about ‘gators, did you know they’re actually very good for you?  Not just to wear silly, but to eat!  Alligators are are high in protein and low in cholesterol and saturated fat.  It’s actually healthier for you than chicken or red meats.  So, don’t be shy my friend, try ‘gator for dinner one of these nights and see if you like it.
2. Seaweed!  All around the world people have caught on to how healthy this grass of the sea is for us!  We Americans like our beef and potatoes, but seaweed is becoming the new “it” food.  It has a lot of minerals in it and includes alginic acid – an acid that binds together poison and toxins in your body and flushes them out of your system.
3. Acai is the new super fruit from South America.  It has ten times more antioxidants than grapes and two times more than blueberries!  It helps increase your circulation and now it’s available in juice, sorbet, or you can add it to your smoothies!
