Digging Into the Volleyball Power Rankings (9/27)

Posted: 09-28-2016 | Categories: Volleyball

It's late-September and we are approximately one month from the end of the 2016 volleyball regular season.

Wait. What?!

Sitting at the halfway point in the season, and this is where the LHSAA Volleyball power rankings now approach the forefront of the conversation. Let’s take a look at the top of each division this week.

The top 3 in Division I dug in and held their spots. Slidell, St. Joseph’s Academy and Northshore still remain on top of the rankings while there were major shake-ups among the rest of the top 10.

Mt. Carmel and Archbishop Chapelle made big moves, jumping from outside of the top 10 to more familiar positions. The Cubs started off the week by defeating two teams ahead of them in the power rankings in St. Joseph’s Academy and Fontainebleau before a strong showing in the Red-Hot Sticker Classic in Baton Rouge. However, St. Joseph’s got revenge in the finals, winning in straight sets.

The Chipmunks only had one game scheduled for this past week, certainly making the most of it, defeating Ben Franklin, a top-10 squad in Division II.

There’s trouble brewing for teams in Division II as the St. Thomas More Cougars shot up the rankings 5 spots and into the top 3. STM has won the last four Division II state championships, and has not lost a set in any of those final matches.

One of those state championships was won against the Assumption Mustangs in 2014. The Mustangs lost a heartbreaker in the 2015 semifinals and are looking for another shot at the Cougars. Holding on to the #1 seed is a good start.

The Brusly Panthers used an impressive 8-1 record this past week to leap frog four teams. The Panthers defeated four schools in higher divisions, and their only loss was to the #4 ranked Fontainebleau Bulldogs in the finals of the Woodlawn (BR) hosted tournament.

Meanwhile, Teurlings Catholic sits atop the rankings for another week. The Rebels have entered the Division III playoffs the previous three years as the #1 seed, and each year walked out of the Pontchartrain Center as state champions.

The big story in Division IV is once again Pope John Paul II. The Jaguars are undefeated and have only been taken to a final and deciding set twice, against St. Joseph’s Academy and St. Amant, both ranked #2 and #12 in Division I respectively. Pope John Paul II will continue to be tested against top teams in the state the rest of the way, and we look forward to seeing those results.

There are story lines everywhere you look at the top of Division IV.

Metairie Park Country Day had won six straight Division IV state championships before Ascension Episcopal dethroned the Cajuns in one of the most thrilling volleyball matches the Pontchartrain Center has ever seen. After two-and-half hours and five sets (22-25, 35-33, 31-33, 27-25, 18-16) the Blue Gators advanced to the finals for the 2nd straight year, however, this time losing to Louise McGehee.

Can the Cajuns recapture their place as champions? Can Ascension Episcopal finally breakthrough and win it all? Can McGehee defend their state title?
