Digging Into the Volleyball Power Rankings (10/11)

Posted: 10-12-2016 | Categories: Volleyball

It’s difficult to climb to the top of the mountain. It took Sir Edmund Hillary and his crew approximately two months to scale Mt. Everest in 1953. Upon reaching the summit on May 29, 1953 Hillary spent only 15 minutes at the top of the world.

At least a state championship buys you 365 days at the top of your Division.

The evolution of this year’s playoff seedings are starting to take shape from the top down. Four of the five Divisions look exactly as they did last week at the top. Division V was the lone exception, but the top 4 squads have all been trading places for weeks now.

District 5-I captured four of the top six seeds in Division I. Slidell, Mandeville, Fontainebleau and (the appropriately named) Northshore have all beat up on each other to this point, and they're not done. The district title is still up for grabs, but that’s only the consolation prize. As the seeds stand now, the bracket would potentially set up 2 quarterfinal matches amongst the district rivals.

We see you, northshore.

Belle Chasse went 4-2 over the week, winning twice against teams from Division I at the annual Lady Tiger Classic hosted by Terrebonne. That propelled the Cardinals from #14 all the way to #9. Belle Chasse lost at #4 Academy of Our Lady in the first of 2 district matchups. In addition to getting the Penguins at home to close the season, Belle Chasse gets a shot at the Slidell Tigers who currently sit in the top 3 of Division I.

Remember how we talked about the difficulties in going 7-0 in one week? Ursuline Academy laughed at us and did it for a second week in a row.

After sweeping the Riverside Academy tournament 2 weeks ago, the Lions roared into Lutcher and did the replicated their prior success. Only #7 St. Amant from Division I was even able to take a set from Ursuline.

Being 30-1 on the season, Ursuline Academy must have 2 goals the rest of the way, avenging their only loss this season (#1 Teurlings Catholic on September 17) and winning a state championship. On November 12 they may get to do both at the same time.

Can we talk about the Pope John Paul II Jaguars for a minute?

They are undefeated at 23-0, but only ranked #24.

In the country.

There is no doubt that Pope John Paul II is the cream of the crop in Division IV. The Jaguars are the 2-time defending state champions. In doing so they bested the current #2 and #3 seeds in straight sets, Isidore Newman in the 2014 finals and Archbishop Hannan last year.

But is PJP the best team in the state?

Since September 27 they have beaten #2 Mt. Carmel (Div. I), #1 Metairie Park Country Day (Div. V), #1 St. Joseph’s Academy (Div. I), #1 Teurlings Catholic (Div. III) & #2 St. Thomas More (Div. II). If you’ve got a better case for another team, I’d love to hear it.

Last week we highlighted Metairie Park Country Day’s penchant for taking on all-comers. The Cajuns may have lost to both Pope John Paul II and Mt. Carmel in the past 7 days, but they’re power ranking went through the roof due to challenging themselves. Their reward was jumping into the #1 seed.

Meanwhile, Ascension Episcopal, Louise McGehee and St. Martin’s Episcopal all raised their actual power ranking as well. McGehee and St. Martin’s did so by going 3-0 and 2-0 respectively. However, the Blue Gators went 3-3, taking on the mighty Cougars of St. Thomas More before travelling to Covington to participate in the Archbishop Hannan Fall Classic.
