Reflections on the 2011 State Volleyball Championships

They walked off the courts of the Pontchartrain Center sweat-soaked, crying…some uncontrollably, many wrapped in flesh colored bandages holding bags of ice to tender shoulders, knees and ankles. And these were the winners! The only thing separating them from their opponents was a dig here, a line call there, a service ace or a heroic save…and, of course, the elation that comes with victory or the ache that comes with defeat. 2011 State Volleyball Championship Broadcast Schedule

The broadcast schedule of the State Volleyball Tournament Championship games is as follows: Division I   – November 13 @ 3 p.m. Division II  – November 13 @ 5 p.m. Division III – November 19 @ 11 a.m. Division IV – November 20 @ 3 p.m. Division V  – November 20 @ 5 p.m. All games will be broadcast on Cox Sports TV (CST) 37.The list of CST affiliates in your area is attached.

LHSAA teammate, FreeRecruitingWebinar.org, recently updated in-service webinars to reflect the new NCAA rule changes, which are noted below: D1 minimum core GPA has increased from a 2.0 to a 2.3 beginning with the class of 2015. Student athletes will also have to complete a minimum of 10 of their 16 core class requirements by the end of their junior year. D1 programs now have the option to guarantee more than one year of aid. D1 programs now have the option to provide an annual $2,000 stipend to student-athletes to cover the true costs of a collegiate education. Under Armour Recalls Football Helmet Chin Straps

Consumer Reports released a statement earlier this week that Under Armour has recalled chin straps for football helmets due to laceration hazards. The football helmet chin straps being recalled are the Under Armour Defender Chin Straps. The faulty chin straps for football helmets have sharp metal snaps that may cut players. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Under Armour has received six reports of injuries that required stitches. Consumers are being warned to immediately stop using the recalled chin straps and contact Under Armour for a free replacement chin strap. 2011 LHSAA State Farm Prep Classic Poster & Program Winner Announced

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) along with State Farm Insurance and Cajun Industries are proud to announce that Zeke Basco of Pineville High School has been named the winner of the 2011 LHSAA State Farm Prep Classic Poster and Program Cover Contest. As winner, Basco and his teacher will receive free hotel accommodations for one night along with free passes to the LHSAA State Farm Prep Classic Dec. 9 through 10, and they will be recognized at halftime of a 2011 State Championship game. In addition, Basco will receive a $100 prize, and he will be featured in an article in the Prep Classic souvenir program.  A big congratulations is extended to Basco, and a huge thank you goes out to all those students who participated in the…

New NCAA Academic Standards Approved

New NCAA academic reform was recently approved, and it will affect this year's freshman class -- the class of 2015. Below are highlights for high school student-athletes: Academic core course requirements have increased. Class of 2015 and beyond D1 students must have a minimum 2.3 core gpa (increased from 2.0) along with the appropriate SAT/ACT score. The new sliding scale for the SAT/ACT will also soon be approved with higher test scores required. Ten of the 16 core requirements must be completed by the end of the junior year of high school. If a student-athlete graduates with a 2.0-2.29 core GPA with the appropriate sliding scale, he or she can still receive a scholarship and participate in practice but cannot participate in game action his or her freshman year. LHSAA Becomes NASPAA Affiliate Member

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) joined the Indiana High School Athletic Association and the Oregon School Activities Association in becoming the most recent affiliate members of the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers. The mission of NASPAA is to raise the level of professionalism of public address (PA) announcers. The LHSAA broadcasts 27 state championship events annually as well as a New Orleans Saints sponsored "High School Game of the Week," which includes 10 regular season games and four playoff games. They also broadcast a one-hour live Annual Prep Football Pairing Show, which announces the 32 teams in each of the five classifications and the playoff brackets leading up to the state football championship games. Throwing Added to Baseball and Softball Pre-season Strength and Conditioning Program

On Wednesday, September 28, 2011 Mr. Kelly Jones and Coach Mark Carroll of Denham Springs High School appeared before the LHSAA Executive Committee to request that throwing to be added to the baseball pre-season strength and conditioning program.  Mr. Jones’ request is as follows: 10.2.1  Pre-season For the two week period prior to practice officially starting, a school is permitted to also throw and condition as part of the strength and conditioning workouts after school.  This throwing is limited to warming up and long toss.  Bullpen workouts and infield/outfield drills are not allowed during these workouts.
