Digging Into the Volleyball Power Rankings (10/25)

As the power rankings have solidified at the top, intrigue picks up a little ways down the seeding lines. Traditional powers mixed with new blood provide the potential for seriously captivating drama. It's time to see who is ready for the spotlight.   Ranking School From Last Week Record #1 Mt. Digging Into the Volleyball Power Rankings (10/18)

Last week four of the five divisions had the same flag flying at the top of the mountain as the previous week. This week, only four teams across all five divisions catapulted over the wall dividing the top four from each division from the rest. The later we move into the LHSAA Volleyball season, the harder it becomes to gain ground on teams with spectacular résumés of their own. The chances to impress at this are few and far between. At some point, teams are who they are.   Ranking School From Last Week Record #1 St. Joseph’s Academy --- 26-6 #2 Mt. Carmel --- 25-9 #3 St. Amant Up 4 25-8 #4 Mandeville --- 21-7 #5 Slidell Down 2…

Digging Into the Volleyball Power Rankings (10/11)

It’s difficult to climb to the top of the mountain. It took Sir Edmund Hillary and his crew approximately two months to scale Mt. Everest in 1953. Upon reaching the summit on May 29, 1953 Hillary spent only 15 minutes at the top of the world. At least a state championship buys you 365 days at the top of your Division. The evolution of this year’s playoff seedings are starting to take shape from the top down. Four of the five Divisions look exactly as they did last week at the top. Division V was the lone exception, but the top 4 squads have all been trading places for weeks now.   Ranking School From Last Week Record #1 St.…

Digging Into the Volleyball Power Rankings (10/4)

“The more things change, the more they stay the same.” – Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr I don’t think the 19th-century French novelist was talking about high school volleyball, but I could be wrong. The statement sure sounds appropriate considering this week’s power rankings. Last week we saw serious movement all around the top 10 in each division. 14 different teams rose or fell in the power rankings by at least 3 spots. This week, that number is only four and no more than one in a division. As the calendar moves to October we haven't been introduced to many new faces among the LHSAA volleyball elite, but we have seen shuffling from within.   Ranking School From Last Week Record #1…

Digging Into the Volleyball Power Rankings (9/27)

It's late-September and we are approximately one month from the end of the 2016 volleyball regular season. Wait. What?! Sitting at the halfway point in the season, and this is where the LHSAA Volleyball power rankings now approach the forefront of the conversation. Let’s take a look at the top of each division this week.   Ranking School From Last Week Record #1 Slidell --- 16-4 #2 St. Joseph’s Academy --- 17-2 #3 Northshore --- 12-3 #4 Fontainebleau Up 3 18-4 #5 Mt. LHSAA State Championship Schedule Changes

The LHSAA’s Executive Committee approved the changing of state championship schedules for five different sports on Thursday. The Select/Non-Select split voted into effect by the member-school principals this past January forced the LHSAA and host committees to re-evaluate the schedules for the sports of Girls’ Basketball, Boys’ Basketball, Softball and Baseball. Girls’ Basketball and Boys’ Basketball, working in conjunction with both Hammond and Lake Charles, added Monday to the schedule and will see six games played each day. Semifinals will take place from Monday until Thursday and Finals on Friday and Saturday. Both Baseball and Softball had an extra day added to their schedule in order to accommodate the influx of teams. Sulphur Parks and Recreation (SPAR) has been the…

Nine Teams Streaking Into Football Season

The high school football season in Louisiana officially kicks off tonight, and just under 300 schools hold aspirations of hoisting a state championship trophy at midfield of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Long before the bright lights of the Dome, coaches everywhere are tasked with making sure their student-athletes are locked in each and every week. This time of year every team has a clean slate, but for the nine teams that boast double digit regular season win streaks, they hope to maintain their winning ways: Team Class / Division Regular Season Winning Streak Last Loss Destrehan Wildcats 5A 21 10/25/13 – 2-0 (f) at South Lafourche St. Thomas Aquinas Falcons III 19 9/5/14 – 40-26 at Loranger Neville Tigers 4A 16…

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 10, 2016) – Led by an encouraging report in football participation nationwide, the number of participants in high school sports increased for the 27th consecutive year in 2015-16 according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
